Distinctive potatoes, devoted farmers behind considered one of Australia’s oldest chip snacks – Potato Information In the present day

It takes 120 days from planting to harvest to make a product that can be consumed in minutes, but the journey of these tubers goes back even further, writes Luke Wong in this ABC landline news article.

Farmer Jason Menegazzo’s family has been growing potatoes for 50 years and has only supplied The Smith’s Snackfood Company for the past two decades.

“We basically started out as European migrants who came to Australia in the small blocks in Werribie South. That was 80 years ago, ”said Menegazzo. “So it’s a long story, it didn’t happen overnight.”

PepsiCo ANZ, the company that owns The Smith’s Snackfood Company, contracts 120 million kilograms of potatoes annually at 47 locations from north Queensland to south Victoria. Around 20 years have gone into developing each of the proprietary potato varieties that have been specially made for crispy and optimized for year-round supply.

The Smith’s brand was introduced from England in 1931 and today celebrates 90 years of manufacturing in Australia.
